The charity noted that as many as one million women may be at risk of experiencing gambling-related problems, with women being more likely to gamble with scratchcards, play bingo, or participate in online games. The charity added that women often feel more stigmatized and ashamed about their gambling behavior than men and are, therefore, less likely to seek help. The Covid-19 pandemic has also led to an increase in online gambling, as more people spend time at home.
Liz Karter, a psychotherapist who specializes in gambling addiction in women, stressed that gambling behaviors manifest differently in women than men, and that women must be aware of early warning signs. GambleAware has launched a campaign to highlight the warning signs of problem gambling for women and draw attention to the help available. The term "gambling harms" refers to the detrimental impact on people's resources, relationships, and health. Warning signs include losing your sense of time, spending more money than you can afford, and hiding your gambling behavior from those close to you.
